Association Divadelná Nitra has been invited to join the Be SpectACTive! Project in view of the artistic successes of the International Theatre Festival Divadelná Nitra and its organisation of activities in the field of audience development. Joining the BS 2 Project too will allow the Association to continue these activities, moving from educational projects for audiences toward creation with audiences and participative dramaturgy. The aim of the project’s many outputs is to engage audiences in Nitra, stimulate local cultural involvement, foster education in the sphere of culture and develop community life. The City of Nitra purports to join the ranks of modern European creative cities, following the so-called “eventful cities” concept.

“Our long-term objective is to form engaged residents in Nitra who feel responsible for what goes on in their city. One of the project’s major benefits is that it is in no way limited locally despite its local orientation. To the contrary, it creates trans-local connections by means of a wide network of partners as well as thanks to the international scope of the International Theatre Festival Divaldená Nitra,” summarisedAnna Šimončičová, the project manager.

Main Project Outputs

In the first project edition, we aim to develop the principle of participative dramaturgy above all by means of the newly formed Audience Programme Board – a group of 12 – 20 Nitra locals who will gain an advisory voice in creating the festival programme. Its members will take part in the programme selection process along with the Board of Curators, a panel of professionals responsible for the festival’s dramaturgy. In February through June 2019, they will join seven meetings and discussions with theatre professionals and festival organisers. In the end and under the supervision of the project coordinator, they will recommend 4 works to be included in the festival programme. During their meetings, they will learn about the festival’s dramaturgical process and explore contemporary foreign and Slovak theatrical production. In September 2019, this group of engaged audience members will attend the festival, where they will have the chance to confront their observations in debates with Slovak as well as foreign professionals.

Further project outputs coordinated in Nitra in 2018 – 2022 will include:an international theatrical production with 3 foreign partners, a community site-specific project in collaboration with a foreign partner, formation of Slovak artistic teams sent for creative residencies abroad and guest appearances of partner companies in Nitra, a network meeting in Nitra, networking, international mobilities, research and much more.
