New square with a new face. Playful and creative

Around 70 theatre, music, visual arts and film events will be organised in the streets of Nitra in the framework of the accompanying programme of 21. Divadelná Nitra International Theatre Festival, which will run from 21 to 26 September 2012. Accompanying programme is traditionally creating an unrepeatable atmosphere of a feast of art and being a nice experience for children and adults. Its main scene will be the Svätopluk Square in front of the Andrej Bagar Theatre in Nitra, which is to get a new face this year.

It will offer contemporary art, create a new space and provoke interest in a new way of community life, while preserving contact between festival visitors and local residents and offering active and attractive ways to spend leisure time. The organisers found inspiration in similar European events which demonstrate that the public seek untraditional forms of contemporary art and know how to appreciate their value.

The New Square will also be attractive for its new appearance. There will be a resting space, festival café, refreshment stands serving also non-traditional foods (e.g. roast festival fish), market with contemporary art and design items, children and family corner, information stand and a stage. Plus there will be a street theatre, visual arts and music programme. The festival will not only have its own square, but also its Festival Street, where visitors will have a chance to try non-traditional ice cream, enjoy their favourite drink while reading their favourite book, or simply have a good meal. There will also be signs showing the distances to Moscow, Ljubljana, Berlin, Budapest, Bucharest or Prague – home cities of our main programme ensembles.

Original ideas, playfulness, creativity, humour and attractive stage settings will dominate in the performances of the Slovak and Czech Street Theatre section. They will mainly be staged at the Svätopluk Square in front of the Andrej Bagar Theatre in Nitra, but also in the pedestrian street or in the space of the BUNKA project. The New Square will also offer visual arts happenings and installations of the students of the Department of Intermedia and Digital Media at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica. Families with children will find amusement in creative workshops and activities within the festival program Playground at the square and for the very first time Nitra will hold the NitraFest Design Market, selling items of contemporary art and design.  The popular White Night will offer – already for the eighth time – night-time tours of the gallery, museum and synagogue in Nitra. Once again the accompanying program will feature theatre productions of youth and student theatres in Nitra within the Young Theatre in Nitra section. The film.eu presents again this year a number of interesting European movies and during the festival there will also be music and radio evening sessions. The festival will also build a REGIO stage where regional cultural and artistic activities will be presented.
