Festival as a (Creative) Industry

Hommage à Dragan Klaić (1950 – 2011)

23 September 2011, 9:30 – 16:00, The Forum of the Young, Fraňa Mojtu 18, Nitra Event guarantee: Theatre Institute, Bratislava

This symposium was established with the aim of raising awareness about the necessity of supporting festivals and arts in general not only because they are crucial to a country’s cultural growth and the development of its moral values, but also because they today play an important role as one of the sectors of the market economy. Therefore, the Theatre Institute and the Divadelná Nitra Association have joined their knowledge and experience to initiate a discussion on how to integrate theatre into Slovakia’screative industry sector.

From the point of view of creative industry, a theatre festival is a product or a service. The market is flooded with products and services, but a real economic growth can only be achieved by those fostering a certain lifestyle, emotion, essence, or idea; by those carrying a message, and fostering the sense of affinity toward a certain social class, community or cult. This is the basis for the emergence and development of creative industry – or creative ecology, as it is now often called in reference to its being like a living organism, which contains different, synergically acting components (commercial, non-commercial, private, public, artistic, educational, etc.). Economic growth and development can only be achieved by taking advantage of human creativity and talent. The final product is, in its essence, very similar to what until recently used to be viewed as an exclusive domain of arts and culture.

The main objective of the Festival as a (Creative) Industry symposium is to stimulate a debate on the importance of organising and supporting arts festivals, and to advocate their position as part and parcel of the economy. The event will feature contributions by renowned theatrologists and experts in creative industry (Péter Inkei – Hungary, Cornelia Dümcke – Germany, Soňa Šimková – Slovakia), as well as by managers of various festivals and research projects (László Bérczés – Hungary, Daniela Chlapíková – Slovakia, Roman  Martinec – Czech Republic, Daniela Chlapíková (4 živly Festival, Slovakia).

The symposium will be hosted by Zora Jaurová (Slovakia).
